NEW IPL PRO CAROLINA SILVA SLAYS THE STAGE IN SOCAL!
Interview By Ben Yosef | Michael Brooks Photography
One of the most exciting competitors at the 2018 IPL SoCal Pro/Am on September 8th in Covina, CA was IPL newcomer Carolina Silva. First off, Carolina would completely bypass all Novice classes and head straight into the Opens.
First was Bikini Open. In a stacked Open division, featuring two classes (A & B), Carolina was placed into the B class. Here, she would take the class, earning 187 points (out of a max of 240) and the IPL Pro Card. That being said, it certainly was tight at the top of Class B. Shout out to Cinthia Beltran (2nd) and Sandy A. Molina (3rd) who ended with 184 points and 182 points, respectively, and rounded out the top three.
Then, it was on to the Bikini Open Overall. In the Overall, Carolina would face Class A winner, Brittney Truman. In the end, Carolina Silva won the judges over in the pose down and earned the Overall title. And she was just getting started in SoCal.
“THIS HAS BEEN AN AMAZING AND MOST PROUDEST MOMENT OF MY LIFE!”
BEN YOSEF: Carolina! Big congratulations on killin’ it in SoCal last fall! AND landing this amazing cover! How are you feeling about all this?
CAROLINA SILVA: This has been an amazing and most proudest moment of my life! I am extremely grateful to have taken on this new adventure in my life. I love this sport! I love building my body. I love cooking and planning for my next meals. This sport has challenged me in so many ways. Ways I cant even explain. So much that I’m hungry and eager to learn more about how far I can continue to build and progress.
BEN: Well, you certainly do have a lot to be proud about! What an amazing day at that contest! You took Bikini Open Class B 1st place, Overall and Pro Card. You took Fitness Angels 1st place and Pro Card. In Sports Model Open you placed a very respectable 2nd in a stacked and super tough class. And, in Evening Gown Open you placed the second. Again, also in an incredibly tough class.
I recently interviewed you for the Natural Bikini Magazine Fitness Angels issue. For this cover story I really want to focus on Bikini. But I definitely wanted to mention that you were incredible in four different divisions. Why did you decide to skip Novice and only enter the Open?
CAROLINA: Thank you so much. I jumped into this sport not really knowing what to expect. And because I took this challenge with a bang, I said I’m signing up for every category. I want to be on stage as many times as I can and I just want to have fun. I still cant get over what happened that day. I went full out!
Novice vs. Open…that didn’t matter to me. But when I asked my coach what should I do, she said Open. I said ok And I just went with the flow. Now I realize what I’ve got myself into. I went to the Bikini competition and was so inspired and decided to move forward with it. Never looking back. No regrets. So many lessons learned and I’ve made so many great friends along the way.
BEN YOSEF: There were so many talented competitors in that Bikini division. And, this was your first show. How were you feeling up there on stage? Were you intimidated at all?
CAROLINA: I was motivated to be on that stage with all the ladies. They were all very supportive. I was not intimidated. I stayed focused.
BEN: Nice! You are packing a good amount of muscle on your frame. And you are bringing impressive conditioning (leanness) as well. What was your training regimen like as you prepared for Bikini?
CAROLINA: Thank you. Yes, I followed a strict meal plan, stayed consistent, ate pretty much the same foods and portion-controlled. For my supplements I used Herbalife shakes and vitamins.
I worked different groups of my body on different days. I loved cycling and therefore was in a class at least four times per week. On top of my eight hour per day weekly work schedule, I pushed myself to hit the gym afterwards. I was passionate to meet my goals for the competition.
BEN: Well, it all paid off. Did you do anything differently to prep for Bikini compared to the other divisions you competed in?
CAROLINA: The workouts and meal prep was the same. The major difference was posing for the different categories.
BEN: Of the four divisions you competed in, did you find any one more difficult than the others? And, how much of a challenge was it for you to transition from division to division throughout the show? Also, do you have a favorite division?
CAROLINA: My favorite division was Fitness Angels. It felt so magical. The biggest challenge for me in all divisions was posing. I really enjoyed posing and definitely would like to work on improving.
BEN: You are now 9.5 weeks away from your next show. The 2019 3rd Annual IPL SoCal Classic. You will be debuting in Pro Bikini and Pro Fitness Angels. How excited are you for this show? And, are you doing anything differently this time around to prepare?
CAROLINA: I’m so excited I could cry. I say that because I have no idea where I get all my strength to do all the things that I do. After my last show I lost control of my eating habits. I just wanted to eat everything that I could get my hands on. All the way from sweets to fried, fatty foods.
“I WAS NOT INTIMIDATED. I STAYED FOCUSED.”
I just went crazy with the food. Then I decided, okay I’m going to do another show in May and I was really nervous or I’m really nervous because I gained my weight again and I was going through some emotional rollercoasters. But I’ve managed to get myself back on track and here I am following a meal prep.
Then, a few weeks ago, I cooked some fish and it was just so disgusting to me. I couldn’t eat it and I was unhappy and I said I can’t do this show and I can’t prep for this show being unhappy and not being able to eat the food that I want to eat. There’s got to be another way.
I asked God to help me and I came across this Bikini Competitor who is a vegan. She was showing some amazing, awesome recipes that she makes as a vegan and her biggest thing is she loves chocolate. I love chocolate, I love sweets and I said you know what…this makes sense. I don’t have to just eat the same foods all the time. I can switch it around. I just need to learn how to count my macros and how to adjust my meals based on how my body is changing.
“THIS HAS BEEN AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE, AND I’M READY TO PUSH MYSELF HARDER!”
It’s all so much fun and such a great learning experience for me this time around. I’m really excited to see how my body is going to look in a few weeks. So definitely the biggest changes I’ve done is my meal plans. My meal plans are basically vegan as of March 1st. And I am tracking all the foods I eat and really paying attention to how my body feels. It’s like the biggest science project I’ve ever done in my life. I love it.
My meals are not 100% vegan, but definitely plant-based. I also switched my supplements around. I’m experimenting and doing what makes me feel good.
BEN: Such an amazing journey you have had so far. And, it’s only the beginning for you! Love it! Thank you so much for being such a big part of this issue. You are quite the cover girl! And congrats again on all of your success last season. I am super pumped to see what 2019 has in store or you!
CAROLINA: Thank you as well. I appreciate you and all you do. This has been an amazing experience, and I’m ready to push myself harder! NMI
