THE PROGRESSION OF IPL PRO ABIGAIL COMSTOCK
Interview By Ben Yosef | Michael Brooks Photography
Abigail Comstock is one of the most active and prolific athletes on the IPL circuit. Since she first touched down on the IPL stage in 2016, Abigail has gone on to compete in five contests, achieving countless 1st place wins and top five placements at each outing. Actually, she has never fallen outside of the top three.
In addition, she has achieved IPL Pro Qualifications in four divisions including Fitness Angels, Evening Gown, Sports Model and Bikini. With such a busy, successful competitor, it was definitely time to take a look at Abigail’s stage career and the improvements she has made over the past three seasons. As exciting as all of this is, it seems that Abigail Comstock is just getting started!
“It was thrilling, nerve wrenching and addicting, obviously. [laughs] It sparked a renewed joy for fitness and gave me a goal to keep pushing forward.”
BEN YOSEF: What an incredible competition career you have had on the IPL stage. And all in just two short years. How do you feel when you look back at when you started and compare it to where you are now?
ABIGAIL COMSTOCK: Thank you! I still feel like that thin girl with no muscles. But then I see pictures of then and now and I can see how much work I’ve actually put in and the growth I’ve made. It’s incredible what our bodies can do when we put our minds to it.
BEN: Your first show was the California Championship in May of 2016. Thin or not, you did very well at that show. Placing 1st in Sports Model Novice and 1st in Bikini Novice Class E. Not bad. What was it like stepping on stage for the first time and how were you feeling after your success?
ABIGAIL: It was thrilling, nerve wrenching and addicting, obviously. [laughs] It sparked a renewed joy for fitness and gave me a goal to keep pushing forward. I couldn’t wait to have my baby and get back to working out and eating right. Six weeks after my daughter was born, and I was given the all clear from my doctor, I was back to the gym!
BEN: So awesome. And yes! You were eleven weeks pregnant at that show. What affect, if any, did being pregnant have on your prep and competing?
ABIGAIL: I think it made the wins that much sweeter, but I know I also used it as an excuse to not push myself as much as I could have.
BEN: Next was the 2017 season. And your year was even more spectacular. First, you returned to the stage just five months after having your baby. A story which landed on the pages of Natural Bikini Magazine as well as made it to the list of 17 top IPL stories of 2017. What was it like getting back on stage and what was it like getting all that publicity and attention?
ABIGAIL: Getting back on stage felt right. It was like coming home after being gone for awhile. Exciting, with a little bit of nerves. I couldn’t believe I not only landed in the magazine, but also the Top 17 IPL Stories of 2017. Both are such amazing honors. I just hope my story helps to inspire other women to keep pushing for your dreams, even after having kids. Your child should be your motivation, not your excuse!
BEN: Love it! And it’s awesome that even after giving birth so recently you entered way more classes and even made tons of improvements from your first show! What did you do in order to bring this look to the stage in 2017?
“…2017 took so much discipline. I was breastfeeding, which means my workouts had to be strategically planned around my daughter’s feedings.”
ABIGAIL: Oh man, 2017 took so much discipline. I was breastfeeding, which means my workouts had to be strategically planned around my daughter’s feedings. What I ended up doing for most of my training was waiting until she fell asleep at night around 10pm, then I’d head to the gym for about two hours. When I’d get home I had about an hour or so until she was ready for her midnight feeding.
I took any nap I could with her during that period, but still had my son who needed to be at school every morning. So, there was no sleeping in. Having a set meal plan did make my days go smoother, as I didn’t have to put any thought into what I was going to eat that day. It was all laid out for me.
BEN: Then in 2018 you were absolutely on fire. Three shows. Wins and Pro Cards all over the place. A magazine cover and more. What made you decide to do three shows that year, considering you normally just do one? And what was your strategy heading into your first show, the California Championship, in May?
ABIGAIL: Such an amazing year. Still in awe over the magazine cover! In 2017 I had actually planned two shows, one of which was suppose to be APEX. But, unfortunately, we were impacted by the California wildfires that had us evacuated from our home for over a week. Due to that, I made the decision to not continue with my prep. That being said, when it was time for the 2018 season, I was excited to use the momentum from my first show and see what I could accomplish. My main goal has always been to get my Pro Card in Bikini and that was what I strived for with the May show. After walking away from May without my Pro Card though, I decided to push myself for Athletic. And having the goal of more muscles I think has really helped propel me to bring a great package for Bikini.
BEN: You definitely packed on some impressive muscle over those two years. And this is also a good segue. In 2018 you added three new divisions. Fitness Angels, Athletic and Evening Gown. Whereas before, you stuck with Bikini and Sports Model. What made you want to expand?
“…I felt I had progressed enough to drop the Novice divisions, but wanted to keep the active feeling while backstage. For me the natural progression was to try new categories!”
ABIGAIL: Yes, Bikini and Sports Model Novice and Open. And in 2017 I added Bikini Mommas. I liked the feeling of being active and busy during the show. Going into 2018 I felt I had progressed enough to drop the Novice classes, but wanted to keep the active feeling while back stage. For me the natural progression was to try new categories!
BEN: Your next show was even bigger. The West Coast Pro/Am in September. At this show you entered a total of six classes. Not only that, but this was your first Women’s Athletic appearance. At this show you also didn’t waste any time and jumped right into your Pro Debut in both Fitness Angels and Sports Model. And you finally won that coveted Bikini Pro Card you were after. And your Evening Gown Pro Card.
What was it like leading up to the show? And what was it like having so much success? Lastly, what was it like making your Pro Debut against the two best (number of shows they have competed in and number of Pro titles won) competitors in the IPL…Elli Nichole and Tawnya Cline?
“It was actually pretty nice going up against the two best for my Pro Debut. Honestly, I knew my chances of winning against them weren’t great. So I felt like I was getting a practice run at the Pro level. It took a lot of the stress away…”
ABIGAIL: I don’t think there was much difference going into that show versus any other. The success is still unbelievable. I have people telling me they are friends with a Pro, and that they tell their friends they know a cover model. It’s unreal. It was actually pretty nice going up against the two best for my Pro Debut. Honestly, I knew my chances of winning against them weren’t great. So I felt like I was getting a practice run at the Pro level. It took a lot of the stress away and I got to enjoy it much more.
BEN: You would then hit the IPL stage for your third and final time of the 2018 season. IPL APEX III. I was definitely excited to see your name on that roster, as this was your first APEX and you were on such a roll all season. At this show you opted for Bikini Open and Women’s Athletic Open, bypassing the three other divisions that you compete in. What was your strategy heading into APEX?
ABIGAIL: Heading into APEX, I would have loved to do some other categories. But one, I didn’t wanna pay to ship Angel Wings. [laughs] Two, I like to put a lot of thought into my Sports Model theme and just didn’t wanna deal with the stress of coming up with something new. So, I went with Bikini Open, and I was excited to give Athletic some more stage time to help practice my posing and just overall feel of a new category.
BEN: Now that you have had so much experience in five different divisions, do you have a favorite?
ABIGAIL: Oh man, that’s a tough question! I don’t think I have a favorite. There are different things I like about each category. Bikini is like a Barbie division. Get glammed up and strut your stuff. Sports Model is so fun and flirty. Evening Gown is elegance. Fitness Angels is full on Victoria’s Secret. And Athletic is like, bam! I’ve got muscles! Getting to do all five divisions is a great way for me to show off all those different aspects of myself and I love them all!
BEN: You are now on the roster for your Pro Bikini Debut in May. This is a pretty deep lineup, which includes top Pros like Kristen Perez and even reigning Pro Bikini APEX Champ, Tawnya Cline. How are you feeling as you head into this show?
“I cant wait to be on stage again and show off my improvements from APEX!”
ABIGAIL: I’m feeling pretty good about this show. I need to get back on the IPL website and sign up for a few more divisions. I’ve been pushing hard to put on more muscle for Athletic, and I think it’s going to translate very well in Bikini.
BEN: Love it! What a fantastic interview. Thank you. And I will see you in a couple months! Any final thoughts?
ABIGAIL: Thank you! I cant wait to be on stage again and show off my improvements from APEX! Thank you for creating a field for natural athletes to show off their hard work and dedication! NMI
