ZYRIAN APURILLO: CAN THE “X-MAN” WIN A SECOND IPL MEN’S ATHLETIC PRO TITLE?
INTERVIEW BY BEN YOSEF | MICHAEL BROOKS PHOTOGRAPHY
Zyrian Apurillo was out for redemption at the 2017 2nd Annual IPL Arizona Pro on May 28th in Mesa, AZ.
Apurillo had competed at the 2016 IPL Arizona Championship, where he placed 2nd in Men’s Athletic Open, missing 1st by one single point. In 1st was Pat Vega, who also won his IPL Men’s Athletic Pro Card at this show. Zyrian then reappeared on the IPL stage at the 2016 Southwest Grand Prix, where he placed 1st in Men’s Athletic Open, winning his IPL Pro Card.
In May 2017, Zyrian would return to the IPL stage for the third time. And, as fate would have it, Zyrian would be facing Pat Vega, for the second time. Adding to the excitement was the fact that this rematch would be occurring on the IPL PRO STAGE. Both men brought their A-game and traded blow for blow. In the end, Apurillo earned a total of 223 points for the win, and Vega 221.
To date, there have only been three men to win IPL Pro Athletic titles. Jason Lubag x 1, Angel Aulet x 2 and Zyrian Apurillo x 1. With his second Pro show fast approaching, the question is… Can X-Man win #2?
BEN YOSEF: Let’s start from the beginning! I assume you have an athletic background?
ZYRIAN APURILLO: It was short lived, but in high school I was involved in cross-country. When I was not in school I studied/practiced Ninjitsu, the art of self defense and weapon mastery. During training, we would train our endurance, strength, running, short distance sprints and sparring.
It was a private club. After two years of martial arts I got involved with the fitness world. Weight lifting, high intensity workouts etc. Just seemed so enjoyable to me. I still do enjoy it even today. That’s why I took it to the next level of becoming an IPL Athlete.
BEN: What is your natural physique like, and how much would you say your background in cross-country and martial arts contributed to the physique you have today?
“I HAVE HUGE CALVE MUSCLES, FAIRLY SIZEABLE SHOULDERS, WIDE UPPER TORSO DUE TO MY WELL DEVELOPED ‘WINGS’ THAT GIVES ME THAT WIDE LOOK WHENEVER I FLEX THEM.”
ZYRIAN APURILLO: Doing cross-country for a short amount of time definitely helped. I was 115 pounds when I started my weight lifting journey, and even then my body stayed lean. Martial arts, on the other hand, contributed not only physically but also mentally. What I mean is being coachable, staying consistent to the daily task that was given to me and the sense of urgency to whatever you are doing. Whether it’s a workout, prepping my meals and eating them in the times to stay consistent.
Training for Physique Competition is pretty similar. Since it was my first time, I had to be coachable. Whatever plan and supplements I had to take, recommended by my coach and by my coach alone, I had to take. And doing the workouts and eating my meals, treating it as if it’s a job was very important as well. It played a vital part in me being serious and taking this as a challenge and seeing this as a real thing and knowing that I have to show up on stage on my A-Game.
BEN: You are bringing a crazy X-frame to the stage. So much so that we have given you the nickname “X-Man”.What do you attribute this coveted, sought after look to?
ZYRIAN: Thank you! You are the second person to actually call me X-man. I feel honored! First off, for my 5’5“ height, I have huge calve muscles, fairly sizeable shoulders, wide upper torso due to my well developed “wings” that gives me that wide look whenever I flex them. From behind, my back muscles are well developed as well. I love working my back muscles. Also, I’m very lean. I watch what I eat for the most part, so I stay around 7-9% body fat year-round.
“I WANTED TO GET AS COMFORTABLE AS POSSIBLE WITH MYSELF IN FRONT OF A CROWD, SO I CAN BE AS CONFIDENT AS I CAN BE ON STAGE.”
I can say many things… genetics and such… but I’m going deep on this one. What I’ve been given since birth was nothing but a seed. The seed wouldn’t have grown to the results it has now if it wasn’t provided with nourishment. What I’m saying is, I am accrediting my results to my team, my Nutrition Head2toe community. The support and the love that they provide is tremendous and plays a huge part for my drive to succeed. Not just as an IPL Athlete, but in life in general. To be an example, to be the best version of myself and to be a driving force behind this belief that others can do it too, if I can do it.
POSING & PRESENTATION
BEN: Your posing and presentation are always top notch every time you hit the stage. What do you attribute your skill in that department to?
ZYRIAN: The people responsible would be Vince and Tawnya Cline. They taught me a lot about “being yourself” on stage. About just having fun and adding my own “flare” to my poses. As soon as I became comfortable with my poses, turns, and found my persona, I practiced. At my house, at Nutrition Head2toe and even in front of people at the shop. I wanted to get as comfortable as possible with myself in front of a crowd, so I can be as confident as I can be on stage.
BEN: So, you are now slated to hit the stage for your second Pro show. In May. The title of this cover story, as you know, is “Can X-Man Zyrian Apurillo win a second Pro Men’s Athletic title?” It looks like you will be joined on stage by some top notch, elite level talent, including Alex Sigala, James Niezen and Zack Smith. What are your thoughts on these guys, the AZ Pro, and the question of you taking title number two?
“EVEN I CAN’T SAY WITH 100% CONFIDENCE WHO’S GOING TO TAKE THE TITLE…”
ZYRIAN: Oh yes, I highly agree on that. We have some elite level talents stepping on the professional platform this year, and this honestly excites me and motivates me even more to push my physique and my presentation to be in the best shape it can be. I would not want to show up on stage along with these phenomenal athletes with an “A-” performance. I will be bringing my A+ game, because I know they will.
Lastly, to answer that question… As I said, we have some awesome athletes this year. I am tremendously excited, and I’m sure they too feel it. Even I can’t say with 100% confidence who’s going to take the title, or if I will be earning my second Pro title. But know once again that I will not just hand the title over, it has to be earned. The May 2018 IPL Pro Men’s Athletic show will be epic. It’s going to be an event not to miss.
BEN: Well said, and yes! This is going to be epic! Thank you for your time and for sharing some of your story with NATURALMAG. I look forward to being back in AZ next month! Any final thoughts?
“…I AM CREATING THE POSSIBILITY FOR ALL OF US TO HAVE AN AWESOME AND LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE IN THIS COMING MAY 2018 IPL SHOW!”
ZYRIAN: It is an honor. Thank you very much for the time. This coming show is going to be an absolute blast! I am excited for my fellow athletes and I am creating the possibility for all of us to have an awesome and life changing experience in this coming May 2018 IPL Show! Once again thank you very much, Sir! NMI
