NEW IPL FIGURE PRO, CHRISTY BYXBEE!
Interview By Ben Yosef | Michael Brooks Photography
Christy first appeared on the IPL stage last year at the October 2016 2nd Annual IPL North Atlantic Championship in Ridgefield, CT. At that contest she landed in 4th place, Figure Open. Well, what a difference five months can make!
Christy returned to the IPL stage with a vengeance at the 2017 2nd Annual IPL Natural Gainz Magazine Classic on March 11th in Manhattan, NYC. In NYC, a drastically improved Byxbee landed in 1st place with a look that was lean and full, with an enviable v-taper and poppin’ shoulders. Needing a minimum of 168 points (out of a max 240) for the PQ, Christy earned 191 and became the IPL’s newest Figure Pro. Rumor has it that Christy may be making her Pro Figure debut later this year.
BEN YOSEF: Congrats on your win in NYC earlier this year! You looked awesome! How are you feeling about it? It has been a few months now. Have you come down from the high yet? [laughs]
CHRISTY BYXBEE: Thank you so much! I am very pleased with what I brought to the stage this year, compared to my last show in October. Do you ever come down from the high?! I am still so excited about my placing and can’t wait to get back on stage.
“I knew I had to build more muscle than I had in the October show in Ridgefield, CT.”
BEN: You are packing a lot of nice, full muscle on your frame. This, of course is awesome for the IPL’s Figure division and helped you win. What is your training like?
CHRISTY: During prep for the March show in NYC I knew I had to build more muscle than I had in the October show in Ridgefield, CT. I never really got out of prep from October to May, but I increased my calories slowly and built back some strength. The majority of my workouts are resistance training. I did split days hitting chest, shoulders and back on separate days. Legs were done twice a week, along with one day of calisthenics and one day of cardio and abs.
BEN: Your back and lats are one of the most impressive areas of your physique. Would you agree? And what do you do to get your you back to pop so much?
CHRISTY: Thank you! I do agree. Back is actually my favorite to train. I was a gymnast growing up, so I think that helped me have a wide lat spread. I train back once a week and my training usually consists of a lot of bent over barbell rows and pull downs, not going too heavy but heavy enough to squeeze and feel every single rep. Practicing my posing consistently for weeks before a show helps to condition and Lats and show that lat spread.

BEN: Your boyfriend, Taylor, has a pretty badass physique as well. And, he also kicked some butt at the Gainz Classic. How did you two meet? And do you get to train together?
CHRISTY: His physique is unbelievable. Talk about an amazing back. Believe it or not, we met in the gym. When we aren’t prepping for a show we train together as much as possible. During prep we have completely different routines and we become seriously focused when we get to the gym. So, we put on our headphones, tune everything out and hit the weights hard.
BEN: Are you stronger than him in any lifts? [laughs]
“He pushes me to be stronger every workout and doesn’t let me give up.”
CHRISTY: [laughs] I pretend to be stronger than him in all lifts, but I don’t even come close. I love having him as a gym partner, though. He pushes me to be stronger every workout and doesn’t let me give up.
BEN: What can you tell us about your tattoos?
CHRISTY: On my shoulder I have two roses. One for each of my kids. Another part of my upper arm has flowers that are colored in and they are designed in the shape of an elephant. I really love the symbolism of elephants (strength, power, wisdom). The rest of my arm is mandala, which I think is so beautiful and the mandala surrounds the Ganesha on my forearm which is the remover of obstacles and the leader of new beginnings.
BEN: What are some of your favorite things about competing? And, what are some of you least favorite?
“Besides the nerves, the rush You get is the best feeling.”
CHRISTY: I love being on stage. I enjoy training and pushing my body to the limit. Picking out the perfect suit, shoes, and jewelry are always fun. Besides the nerves, the rush you get is the best feeling. To showcase your body you worked so hard to perfect for months before your show is so rewarding, no matter what the outcome of your placing is. I love seeing how quickly I am able to transform my body during prep. Dieting is the biggest challenge through out the entire process as well as how quickly you become fatigued during the end of the prep.
My least favorite part of prep is the amount of cardio I have to do in the last week of prep. During the show I love to see how much fun everyone has and all the competitors are always so supportive of each other. I’ve met so many amazing people. It’s truly one of the best experiences of my life.
BEN: Well, you are a super exciting competitor! And again, your improvements were awesome. I look forward to having you back on the IPL stage, especially at the Pro level. When will we see you back up there?
“I want to make sure I bring my best package to the stage as an IPL Figure Pro.”
CHRISTY: Thank you so much. I’m taking a short break for now, but you’ll see me back on stage in the spring. I want to make sure I bring my best package to the stage as an IPL Figure Pro. NMI
