WHAT IS NATURAL BODYBUILDING?
BY BEN YOSEF
At the most literal and strict level, “Natural” is only consuming foods in their most earthly state. No additives, preservatives, industrial grade processing etc. Oh, and NO SUPPLEMENTS either. Along with that diet, an individual would only utilize training and exercise that relied on one’s body weight (calisthenics) as well as tools that can be found in nature… boulders, rocks, logs, water (swimming) etc…
Ok, that is obviously extreme but stated just to make a point. But then, I would most definitely be interested in seeing what results are possible utilizing such a minimalist approach. But I digress….
On the other end of the Natural spectrum would be someone who employs any training methods or systems they choose. Man-made free weight contraptions, machines…all “equipment” is far game. And the diet and supplementation? That would be any substance that is legal. But then, as we know, the legality of many supplement products varies from country to country. And many supplements that are actually legal and sold over the counter at your local GNC contain questionable ingredients that land on the “Banned Substance” lists within many federations.
“IT WOULD APPEAR THAT ‘NATURAL’ IS WHATEVER EACH FEDERATION DECIDES IS NATURAL. AND THEREIN LIES A PROBLEM.
So, again, what is Natural Bodybuilding? As I mentioned in my opening letter, there are 49 federations who position themselves as “Natural” in order to attract a certain demographic of competitor. If you were to investigate each federation’s drug-testing policies you would no doubt find 49 different answers. Therefore, it would appear that Natural is whatever each federation decides is Natural. And therein lies a problem. NMI
