TAWNYA CLINE TAKES APEX PRO BIKINI & SPORTS MODEL! OPEN & MASTERS!
Interview By Ben Yosef | Michael Brooks Photography
Tawnya Cline completely changed the game at APEX II, in both Pro Bikini and Pro Sports Model. The looks that she brought, her physique, presentation, outfits… All were at a level unmatched on any IPL stage.
And, with all that she achieved at APEX II, and the entire 2017 season for that matter, TC is showing no signs of slowing down.
“…I really wanted to challenge myself and learn something new. I did not know how to break dance, and actually put a ton of thought into this sport for APEX.”
BEN YOSEF: I was just telling Karl Hall (APEX II Men’s Pro Bodybuilding winner) that people are going to OD on him. [laughs] He is on the cover of the spring issue of GAINZ, and also in this issue of NMI. It’s like the same thing for you, being the cover story for Natural Bikini!
So, let’s get into it! Starting with Pro Sports Model…you absolutely CRUSHED that! Where did you learn those breakin’ moves? And, how long did you work on that routine?
TAWNYA CLINE: If you can believe it, I really wanted to challenge myself and learn something new. I did not know how to break dance, and actually put a ton of thought into this sport for APEX. I had my first private lesson mid 2016. Unfortunately, I had a back injury, so I was unable to practice after that for a while.
I started over with teaching myself through several instructional YouTube Videos. My husband would crack up as I would repeat the videos over and over until I got the moves. I am SUPER uncoordinated, so I knew I needed plenty of practice time.
Once I gained a little coordination, and felt I could somewhat move with a flow, my friend Vanessa Delgado from Pulse Lifestyle Apparel and Hip Hop Choreographer came over to help me put it all together. The handstands were something I worked on weekly, after CrossFit. I started on the wall, and began to work my way off of it.
Honestly, I know they weren’t perfect, but I had so much fun learning and performing it all on stage. I feel this division was created for FUN and originality, as well as physique. I want to set the bar and really WOW the crowd. I sure hope people do not OD with me yet. I am just getting started!
BEN: That is so AWESOME! And, it’s really a testament to the caliber of competitor you are. To put so much into, not only your physique, but also your presentation and routine for this division. Not to mention, your outfit and props! Just…awesome.
“2018 is going to be another epic year!”
You were equally as impressive in the Bikini division. Within the four classes you competed in at APEX your scores ranged from 222 to 230 (out of a max of 240). Some of the highest scores in the show. And, that 230 in Pro Bikini Masters WAS actually the highest total at APEX.
We talked in great detail about your success on the APEX Pro Bikini stage in the spring issue of Natural Bikini Magazine. So, people can check that out. What tips can you offer to competitors, within any IPL division, who aspire to achieve success in this sport? And lastly, when will you see you back on stage in 2018?
TAWNYA: I would have to say as far as tips, put some effort into your division. Take the time to learn how to pose correctly and really show your assets. Take the competition seriously, so you can be your best. Hire a posing coach, if you need one.
The posing is so important for your confidence. When you feel confident on stage, nothing else matters. Lastly, do not ever compare yourself to anyone. Be your best, and that is all you can do. You can not do anything about who shows up. Have fun!
I plan to debut Masters Pro Evening Gown in California, May 5 along with Pro Bikini and Pro Sports Model. I will also complete later in the year for all those divisions with goals to defend my titles at APEX. 2018 is going to be another epic year! Thank you, Ben, for the chance to share. NMI
