ELENA RENTERIA 2-IN-A-ROW PRO FIGURE NATURAL O?
Interview by Ben Yosef | Photos by Lorenzo Gaspar
Mexico born Elena Renteria is the poster girl for PNBA Pro Figure. An NPC competitor during 2009 and 2010, Renteria jumped ship over to the drug-tested fed INBA/PNBA in 2013. She landed with force onto the natty stage taking first place honors in both Masters Figure and Open Figure at two of the fed’s most competitive events, the Amateur World Cup Championships and of course the PNBA Pro Natural Olympia.
In 2014, and right in the middle of this interview, Elena hopped on stage at the PNBA Pro Team USA and snagged herself another win. In a sport where much of the talk is about brutal and grueling contest preps, Renteria’s vibe is unique and refreshing. A fun, cheery, happy champion, she offers an enlivening perspective on the sport. Can Elena Renteria’s positive flow lead her to a second consecutive Figure O?
“I love to help and motivate people!”
Elena! You have such an amazing physique. What lead you to Figure competition?
I have always loved to exercise. When I was a teenager I always participated in athletics. I won running competitions, and later in my life I fell in love with weights. I competed in NPC organizations and last year I became part of INBA/PNBA, with which I won my first Pro Natural Olympia. That really motivated me to work harder and keep improving myself.
And you have not competed since winning the 2013 Figure Olympia, correct?
That is correct!
What have you been up to throughout the last ten months?
Training hard, improving myself, and helping other people to reach their goals! I love to help and motivate people!
Awesome! Will you be competing at all before the 2014 Natural Olympia?
I’ll do Team USA.
That is this weekend right?
“It really is fun! I love what I do. My mind and my heart are connected!”
Nice! I have seen a couple of photos you have posted. You definitely look ready. How are you feeling?
I’m feeling really good after I just ate a big steak. [laughs] I was so hungry!
[laughs] Good for you. You seem to have a really good, fun attitude towards the sport and towards fitness. How do you keep it fun and how do you manage to be so seemingly calm and relaxed less than 24 hours away from stepping on stage?
It really is fun! I’m so blessed to be here with these wonderful people, all pursuing their dreams. It’s amazing! I love what I do. My mind and my heart are connected! God is within me!
AT THIS POINT IN THE INTERVIEW ELENA COMPETED IN THE PNBA TEAM USA PRO FIGURE AND WON 1st Place.
Congratulations on your Pro win! Wow, how excited are you?
So excited! So Happy! I am proud to belong to INBA /PNBA elite athletes.
The Natural Olympia is a little over a month away. Will you be making any changes or adjustments to your game plan during this time?
“I feel very fortunate to be part of the INBA/PNBA Natural Olympia…”
Now my protein and carb consumption is higher.
Do you work with a coach or do you do your own prep?
I’m working with Kiyoshi Moody!
Nice! When did you start working with Kiyoshi and how has it been to work with him?
I believe I started in May. I’m very fortunate to be part of his team. He is a very good coach!
How do you think your 2014 Olympia package will compare to 2013?
Now I’m more focused on my upper body. I think this will help bring more balance to my physique!
Well, I look forward to seeing what you bring to the stage next month! You are one of the best Figure competitors in the sport today. Any final thoughts about the sport and the Natural Olympia?
I feel very fortunate to be part of the INBA/PNBA Natural Olympia and to compete with the best natural Figure athletes in the whole world! Thank you for your time! I’ll see you next month! NMI
